Springhill is located in the Cobequid Mountains which are considered part of the Appalachian Mountains. The range stretches from Cape Chignecto in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia in the west through to Pictou County in the east. The town of Springhill, Nova Scotia is famous for two main things, one bad and one good. First, the Springhill Mining Disasters of 1891, 1956 & 1958 that claimed the lives of a total 239 men. The community was founded as "Springhill Mines." Coal mining lead to economic growth, with its incorporation as a town in 1889.The mines in the Springhill coalfield were established in the 19th century, and by the early 1880s were being worked by the Cumberland Coal & Railway Company Ltd. and the Springhill & Parrsboro Coal & Railway Company Ltd. which its investors sold in 1910 to the industrial conglomerate Dominion Coal Company Ltd. (DOMCO). All coal mining had ceased in the area by the early 1970s after three horrifying disasters and a move away from fossil fuels started to emerge. At the start of the millennium, alternative uses of the abandoned mines were considered and a unique opportunity was developed.
